Reasons for Artificial Feeding of Infants

Abstract
The reasons for artificial feeding of infants were surveyed in 146 mothers who visited the Maternal-Child Health Centers of Chonnam University Medical School Hospital, Kwang ju Christian Hospital and the Well-Baby Clinic of Kwang ju Health Center.
One hundred and eight mothers who feed their infants at the breast served as a control group. Clinical, social and physiologic factors influencing the feeding methods for their infants were also explored and compared between both groups. The main reason for the artificial feeding was "lack of breast milk" which comprised 39.0%, and the second reason "mother¢¥s occupation" in 24.0%. Of the mothers who expressd "lack of breast milk", 38.6% stated inadequate filling of the breast as the main problem.
The occupational reason was found to be due to inability to be released from their employment at feeding times as the specific problem. The higher the educational and socio-economic levels of the mother, the more the artificial feeding was found. The weight gain was better in the infants fed at the breast than in the infants fed artificially. It is suggested that most of the infants could enjoy feeding at their mothers¢¥ breasts by pre-and post-natal guidances to their mothers.
